Pomeranian dogs are considered to be pretty smart. They’re not the most intelligent dog breed, but they rank above average regarding intelligence. What makes them so smart is their ability to communicate effectively with humans.

Even if Pomeranians are smart dogs, they can be challenging to train because of their independent personality. However, with proper guidance, Pomeranians can quickly learn tricks and commands. They also have a keen understanding of human speech patterns much better than other dog breeds.

Pomeranians are known for their affectionate personalities, and they make excellent therapy dogs because they do well with strangers when properly trained. They require regular exercise and care, but if left alone for too long, they can become mischievous.

Smart Traits of Pomeranians

Alert in Character

Pomeranians are alert in character because they’re always on the lookout for anything new or unusual, and they’re quick to sound the alarm if something’s up. Moreover, they have sharp, watchful eyes.

Exhibits Intelligence in Expression

Pomeranian exhibits intelligence in expression. This means they are very expressive and often use body language to communicate. For example, they might give you a “puppy dog eyes” look when they want something or sit up and make sounds when they’re hoping for a treat.

Inquisitive by Nature

Pomeranian are inquisitive by nature. Which means they’re curious about almost anything. For example, if you’re cooking in the kitchen and your Pomeranian is following you around, chances are he’s curious about what you’re doing and what smells so good.

Pomeranian IQ Tests

Assuming you would like methods on how to test your Pomeranian’s intelligence:

TEST 1: 3 Cups Method

The 3 Cups Method is one of the classic ways to find the IQ of a dog.

  1. Set up three plastic cups in a line on the floor.
  2. Have your dog sit and stay, and then put a treat under one cup.
  3. Shuffle them around, so your dog doesn’t know which one has the treat.
  4. Tell your dog to “find the treat.” Then wait and see if he can remove the cardboard and get to the treats!

If he does it within 30 seconds, give him/ her more treats.

TEST 2: Towel or Blanket Method

A good way to measure your Pomeranian’s IQ is to give them a towel or blanket test.

  1. Drape a towel or blanket over your Pom’s head
  2. See how long it takes for them to remove it.

The faster they can do it, the higher their IQ score is likely to be!

Pomeranians are smart in their own way. They understand what we say to them and can respond in ways that let us know what they want or how they’re feeling. This makes them really good at learning tricks and commands, which is why many people choose to train their Pomeranians as service or therapy dogs.
